Earlier, we showed you how to remove the Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows XP or Windows Vista. This time around, let’s see how you can hide that often-popping up Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows 7.

How to hide the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ Icon in Windows 7?

Right click in the date area in the system tray and choose ‘Customize Notification Icons’

Safely Remove Hardware Icon

In the Window that pops up, you’ll see ‘Windows Explorer – Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media’. Choose Hide Icon and Notifications from the list on the right. Click OK.

That’s it. You will no longer see the Safely Remove Hardware icon. It’s hidden!

Update: This dialog is necessary if you want to eject hardware like USB thumb drives, iPods, etc. safely. As Kestrel points in the comments below, your drives may go corrupt if you don’t eject them safely.

I think your topic is misstated. You shouldn’t want to remove the “Safely Remove Hardware” button (and I have never seen it “pop up” in any version of Windows). Hide it, sure. But there’s a reason it exists, and you do a disservice to your readers by not reminding them than many USB memory devices–flash drives, thumb drives, iPods and other music players, to name a few–can become corrupted by failing to eject or disconnect them before removing them from a USB port.

@Kestrel: Apologies. I’ve updated the post to reflect your point. Thanks!

I’m trying to do the reverse and put the icon on my tray so i can eject my hard drive and my computer does not have the option you have shown in the post. Any ideas?

What I want is to remove it completely from my notification area not “hide” it inside the little arrow next to the notification area…I have made a shortcut to it in my star menu in case I ever DO need it…I chenge all my external HD policy settings to quick removal (No write behind caching) slower? maybe but it’s not putting off writing the files until the last minuite when I need to leave work and I’m waiting for it to finish doing something I thought would have finished when I initially saved it to the ext. HD….Is there anyway to REMOVE it from the Notification area as opposed to just HIDING it? Thanks!
