If you want to preview the contents of a .zip file before downloading in Firefox, install ArchView.

Once you’ve installed the ArchView addon, a small icon appears in the status bar. When you click on a link to a zip file, Archview will display the individual files and folders present in the .zip archive. You can then download individual items from that .zip file.

Besides just supporting the .zip format, ArchView also supports .iso and .rar formats.
