Enable Remote Desktop in Windows 7
The Remote Desktop feature in Windows 7 can be used to connect remotely to other computers, so that you can control one computer from another pretty easily. Remote Desktops in Windows 7 have Aero and multi monitor support, and other enhancements you’ll love.
How to turn on and use Remote Desktop in Windows 7?
This is how you turn on remote desktop in Windows 7:
Click the Start button, right click on Computer and choose ‘Properties’. You can, alternatively, press the Win+PauseBreak keys together.

Click on Remote Settings in the left panel of the Control Panel Window that pops up.

In the new window that appears, make sure that ‘Allow Remote Assistance to this Computer’ option is checked. Also, turn on any one of the options mentioned as per your preference : either allow connections from your network, or any machine.

Click Apply, OK. You’re done. You have now turned on the remote desktop tool that allows any machine to access your Windows 7 computer.

The Internet is replete with How to turn on Remote Desktop in Windows 7, I am unable to find the step-by-step actual instructions on using it.
Mysterious passwords appear with instructions to “tell the assistant this password” but the assistant cannot connect without having the password first.
Any step-by-step instructions around?

@Greg: if you have a ‘home’ edition of Win7, remote desktop is not available.

Artie, does the win 7 PC have a static IP address on the LAN? If not, it’s IP address may have changed since you configured the port forwarding in your router. For example, my router has port 3389 forwarded to a static IP address of, say, 192.168.1.55. Whatever PC has that IP address (only one can have that address), will receive the RDC connection. Good luck

I meant, of course, . . . its IP address . . .

I have the home Premium edition and would like to know what I need to have to get the remote tool. Is there a patch or do I have to upgrade to a different edition of W-7?

I tried for years to get Windows to work for these connections but their offering is just impenetrable to me. I have been using 3rd party remote desktop software for years and despite the positive buzz around Windows 7, I will not be going back anytime soon.
