The Only 5 Freeware You’ll Need To Make Your Windows Computer Faster

with 17 comments

You bought that computer only last year. But, Windows runs too slow that anyone else using it mistakes it for being on an age-old machine. All because you loaded it with too much junk that didn’t get completely removed even when you uninstalled the associated software.

It’s time you set things right and make your Windows computer faster. Trust me: These five programs are all that you’ll need to make Windows run faster on your computer. Nothing else. Take my word for it: use the following programs and then come back and tell me how your Windows computer runs faster.

1. CCleaner (Download)

Crap Cleaner. The name says it all. CCleaner cleans up unused temporary files and traces left by a myriad of programs. CCleaner also doubles triples up as a registry cleaner and an uninstaller. Ask anyone who has used it – they’ll tell you how great the program is.

2. Startup Delayer (Download)

When Windows boots, your startup programs are also loaded along with it which causes a drag in initial performance – there are many programs that you probably won’t use in the first few minutes or so – what’s the point in loading them anyway? Startup Delayer can be used to launch the startup programs sometime after Windows boots (e.g.: I can use this app to launch my media player about 10 minutes after Windows starts).

3. PC Decrapifier (Download)

This freeware can remove all the bloatware that comes preloaded with your brand new computer. PC Decrapifier uses this list and removes all the preinstalled software in one go, unattended – doing it manually will be pain in the neck. Restart and voila! Windows should run faster because you’ve removed most of the crapware.

4. Defraggler (Download)

Coming from the makers of aforementioned CCleaner, Defraggler speeds up the otherwise slow defragment process and lets you defrag individual files. It can be carried on your pen drive as a single .exe file. Supports both NTFS and FAT32 file systems. Defragmenting should make Windows run faster.

5. TweakUI (Download)

Tweak UI comes straight from the horse’s mouth (Microsoft). This paragraph is just not enough to list all the things it lets you tweak. It can fine-tune everything from the Windows user interface to the Windows menu speed, making Windows run considerably faster. This is a must have for everyone who likes to tinker with their Windows OS to get the best out of it.

  1. In addition to this I suggest Quicksys RegDefrag which is a free utility that defrags and optimizes Windows registry there by improving the performance.

  3. I’m using ccleaner for sometime now and its really useful. In addition, i also suggest to manually clean the prefetch folder. (type ‘prefetch’ in run window). It really speeds up application loading processes. The defraggler thing is new to me. Thanks shankar for this great and precise list.

  15. Knew about some of these, but for my toolkit for working on toher’s PC’s Decrapifier sounds like the hot ticket!

While CCleaner is a great cleansing tool, for both temp files & the best free Registry tool ever made there is another similar tool.

“Cleanup” by Steven Gould is the best Temp file cleaner of them all, removing ALL temp files found on a PC.

I use Cleanup where I work because it effectively removes all temp files on ALL profiles whereas CCleaner will only clean the profile that is logged onto. Great if you’re IT and need to clean more than one profile at a time.

  16. I am using the CCleaner, and this program is actually great. i recommend it.

I’m new the the PC Decrapifier. This program is okay. It is more usefull when your computer is new and you have a lot of junk that recieved with your computer.

this is called the Avast! antivirus. it is FREE to use but it is necessary to register before the end of the initial 60 day trial period. Following the registration you will receive by e-mail a license key valid for a period of 1 year. After you have downloaded and installed the program, the license key must be inserted into it within 60 days.

  17. All great free tools, but don’t forget about free antivirus. AVG free edition and Avast. It may not actively make your system run faster, but it will keep it from getting spyware/malware installed, thereby keeping it from slowing down. In a sense, keeping your system faster.
