Set Reminders inside Gmail with G Alert Greasemonkey Script

with 10 comments

G Alert is a Greasemonkey based tool for Firefox that lets you set reminders inside Gmail. Basically, you tell G Alerts to remind you of something, set the time, and then a pop up window comes up reminding you of the task you’ve set – all this happens inside your Gmail window.

You can even associate your emails with alerts. G Alert, according to the author, does not transmit any information on the web, and works completely in your local computer – your reminders are saved only locally. It’s like Remember The Milk, but it works locally.

You need to have Greasemonkey installed on Firefox to use GAlert. You can download GAlert from here. Once installed, you’ll see a bar on the top of your Gmail page.

Here’s a quick step by step guide to how to make it work for you:

Set the time for the reminder, e.g., 5 mins. then click Add Notes. Type some text, and then click Add Note. Click Go and you’re done with it.

If you want any messages to be associated with the reminder, set the time, select the messages, add notes and then click the Go button finally.

In the specified time the G alert will remind you of the stuff you’ve noted down, in a pop-up window:

If you want to edit the notes and reminders, click View next to the Go button and you should be able to edit the reminders you’ve set.

Note: Now, here are some more things you should know. This script didn’t work with the new version of Gmail when I tried. You need to revert to the old version.

You also need to have pop ups enabled for Gmail.com on Firefox. Otherwise, the pop up blocker will prevent G Alert from alerting you. The project is still in alpha stage, and you might see some niggles here and there, don’t worry just report to the author.

Why would you need it?
If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want to have yet another account in yet another web service, and just want a simple tool to set reminders, this is for you.

  1. Nitfy little extension! Very useful indeed. I also like the Remember the Milk Greasemonkey script that let’s you enter your tasks directly into Gmail. I had written about this earlier:

Both of these combined is sweet! Thanks man!

  4. Shankar , it looks good but reverting back to the old version is not something which I believe I am willing to do. I’ll wait for it to work with the new version :)

  5. And yes…stumbled it too :)

  6. @Abhijeet: Thanks for the stumble.

  10. I desperately want this on my Gmail, but I use Google Apps, and it doesn’t appear to work on this newer version of Gmail. Any chance a new version will come out?
