Make the most of Google Image Search

with 18 comments

Google Images is probably the most ‘comprehensive’ image search engine out there. Many of you should have probably used it to find a wide range of pictures. Here are some tips to make the experience better:

Easy Image Type Search

type of image

Install this Greasemonkey script, it adds an option to the image search result pages – you can specify the type of the images that should be shown. You can restrict image search to only display images that look like people’s faces or you could restrict it to fetch only news related images.

Make thumbnails point straight to the Images

By default, when you click on an image, you’re taken to a page with frames that loads the page where the image is present. You need to click on the thumbnail on top of that page to view the image in its real location. You can otherwise install this Greasemonkey script – it links the image thumbnails on the search result pages straight to their original URLs.

Enlarge Pictures In the Same Window

This Greasemonkey Script for Firefox displays the enlarged version of the image on the right side of the same page, when clicked.

Download Images in batch from Google Image Searches

This is like a desktop application, download it here and open the WebImageGrab file (you need to have Flash installed). Specify a keyword, and the software will automatically start downloading images for that keyword from Google Image Search and place them in its own folder.

  1. Good tips, here.

But for commercial use, like on a blog, it is safer to use Creative Commons attribution images – no copyright hassles.

I’ll probably try the greasemonkey script too – anything faster is better.

  13. For enlarged images, it’s more fun (though I’m not quite sure about the convenience of it) to use the Google Image Ripper. You’ve probably seen it before, but if you haven’t, it takes a Google Image query, finds the images, and displays them at full resolution.

However, if you are going to use images on your blog, you should probably stick with freely licensed images. My favorite place to get them is Wikimedia Commons, which is affiliated with Wikipedia; both are part of Wikimedia. The Commons only allows certain licenses that coincide with open source ideals. There are many other good resources as well though.

  15. ZEEGG Image Search:This site is powered by Live Images Search…But what it attracts me only is that you can view the images directly by one click on the result page instead of opening a new window with the original page in a frame, which I think will save me a lot of time, bandwidth, mouse clicks…(Will this site be a form of violation of the intellectual property rights of others?)
